Saturday Afternoons of My Childhood
As a little boy, Filippo sits at the keyboard while his mother washes the church carpets. Saturday afternoon has a very special light, softer and more golden, which stretches the shadows along the naves and makes the stone appear softer to the eye. The church is empty; one only hears the rush of flowing water, the determined movement of hands, and the scent of laundry spreading through the still warm air.
Sitting at the keyboard, the little boy feels how the sound of the organ transforms the space. The notes slowly and leisurely rise, pass through the soap-infused air, and settle on the carpets laid out to dry, some of which hang on the railings directly in front of the main entrance. Sound and scent brush against the columns and return with a softer reverberation. The church takes on a homely and yet solemn character; the vibration of the music mixes with the smell of cleanliness, transforming the humble work into a silent ritual.
Through this experience, Filippo learns that caring for the material and striving for beauty belong to the same horizon.
