The famous Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner is considered the founder of modern zoology, but as a true scientist of the 16th century, he was also: a prominent physician, botanist, linguist and - of course - a literal adventurer.
In his "Descriptio Montis Fracti sive Montis Pilati" from 1555, he recounts his ascent to the summit of Mount Pilatus, but we can also follow him into the caves of the Alps. At night, the moon shines so brightly into the cave that the light itself seems to take on the form of a mist. It gathers on the ceiling and makes the limestone stalactites glitter and shimmer; tears of white liquid drip into puddles on the rocky floor, which never dries. Moon milk.
