In 1891, a fire broke out at the Curling Bros. barbershop in Westlake, NY. All the aftershaves containing mint, lime, vanilla, and lavender burned. A charred bottle was found half full. It smelled exactly like that.

Burning Barbershop is a fougère—a classic genre of mostly masculine fragrances that uses hay and vanilla notes with herbal lavender and the bitter green base of oakmoss. It's instantly recognizable on grandfathers everywhere.
This is the scent of a fougère that has been through a fire. I imagine the bottle was full and boiled in the extreme heat of the flame until the glass was black and shattered. After the embers had cooled, they were dug out from under the debris. Inside, the boiled resin of everything fresh and inviting from the aftershave clung to the glass. Thus, the radiant glow of limes, the purity of lavender, the delight of roses, the kick of mint, and the sweetness of vanilla, all boiled into a rectified solid.
