In some of my favorite places in New England—along the coast north of Boston, on Nantucket, MV, and elsewhere—there are groves. Hidden behind old gray cedar houses, in hot summer thickets, brackish groundwater bubbles. Small ponds and boggy marshes teem with birds, frogs, and dragonflies in summer. Large, heavy heads of hollyhocks and wild roses glow like beacons in the damp, muddy grass.
