"Hail Rita, vessel of love, bride of Christ, woman of sorrows, from the thorns of the Redeemer, beautiful as a rose, you were born." This phrase is carved as a greeting on the central beam of the basilica's facade.
The fragrant memory refers to the fact that in January 1457, while ill in her monastery cell in Cascia, she asked a cousin to bring her a rose from Roccaporena. Tradition says that God granted this wish, and Rita's relative picked a rose for her that had bloomed in the winter, amidst the snow.
