The Code of Emotion
Parfum extract
Chords: Surprising, calming, uplifting, cheerful
Fragrance profile: Fruity Fougère
My creativity has always been driven by the idea of an “emotion machine” that creates fragrances specifically designed to evoke emotions.
For this creation, I started with the familiar fougère structure, but pushed its boundaries by adding a surprising tropical note, led by juicy mango.
The fragrance combines soothing familiarity with playful freshness, thus providing surprise and joy.
Even before launching my first perfumes, I was obsessed with the idea of an "emotion generator machine." This is what drives me throughout my creative process: creating fragrances with the specific goal of evoking an emotion.
Like a mechanic fine-tuning a powerful engine, I carefully place each note to evoke specific emotions—e.g., the intensity of lovers' passion, a memory of the smell of skin, a feeling of nostalgia for an imaginary place, etc.
With this particular creation, I wanted to explore the mechanism of emotional response to my medium of expression, the art of perfumery. How can I make it work? Are there methods that can be replicated? And can they trigger the same emotions in different people?
I experimented in different directions, focusing on a method I'd used many times before, but this time with more focus and intention. The goal was to decode an emotion, to deconstruct the input that triggers it—in other words, to write a "code of emotion."
For this experiment, I started with the classic fougère structure—a green, aromatic, woody accord that's familiar and recognizable. It's also an accord I've only recently begun to develop an emotional connection with. But I wanted to push it further, challenging its traditional boundaries with an unexpected twist: a vibrant tropical fruit accord, with juicy, delicious mango at its heart.
This exotic note interrupts the predictable accord of the fougère, transforming it into something familiar yet surprising. The result is a fragrance that is recognizable yet refreshingly different. It takes a moment to recognize the familiar fougère footprint beneath the lush and original facet of the fruitiness.
For me, this fragrance evokes a joyful sense of surprise—a contrast between the grounding comfort of the fougère and the playful brightness of the tropical fruits. It feels indulgent yet invigorating, profound but never heavy, delicious without slipping into gourmand.
I also set myself a second challenge: I wanted to avoid iris or iris-like accords altogether and keep the animal notes to a minimum, just a few clean musk notes.
